The translation faculty
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Translation Faculty of Kazakh Ablai khan University of International Relations and World Languages was established in June, 1998. The Translation Studies provides students with an opportunity to develop and perfect their linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to pursue a career in the field of translation and interpretation. The areas covered by the Translation Studies Program include special vocabulary acquisition (legal, medical, business, technical and etc.), written translation and research methodology. The purpose of the Program is to provide students with an in-depth training which is at the same time extensive and varied enough to make graduates highly marketable in both the public and private sectors.
Currently there are 733 students and 77 language teachers at the department.
The modules offered by departments are highly recommended for it equally emphasizes on the demand of market and theory base. Central area in the curriculum is the courses related to translation and interpreting theory. Core modules include Theory and Practice of Translation, Translation Strategies, Intercultural Communication, General Professional English, Practice of Literary Translation, Written Translation, Literature and Translation Problems, English for Specific Purposes and so on. Alongside with it students of the faculty may freely choose optional modules among those offered by departments.
Graduates of the faculty can work for public and private sectors or become self-employed entrepreneurs. In addition to translation and interpreting, many graduates work as instructors, researchers or at the managerial level.
In 2009 Kazakh Ablai khan University of International Relations & World Languages won the State Grant and introduced a specialization ‘Simultaneous Interpretation from Kazakh into other languages’.
The Program “Translation Studies” aims at developing linguistic and interpretation competence in students to provide mutual understanding between the representatives of different cultures and languages in different spheres of international, political, economic, scientific and public spheres of life in the framework of interpretation.
The Translation Faculty is aimed at training translators and interpreters in all spheres of human activities and meeting the requirements demanded by International Educational Standards.
Mission of the faculty is to train translators responsible for the effective and correct intercultural and lingua-cultural interactions. The program allows students to develop skills in language use and in the understanding of cultural difference. Translation across languages allows access to issues of intercultural differences, and the program will encourage its students to think about the complexity of communicating across cultures, nations and linguistic borders.
The primary aims of the faculty are:
- to improve the quality of teaching with the purpose of stabilizing the admission and graduation processes;
- to focus the content and the form of teaching on the development of overall professional and special competences of the future translators/interpreters in order to adapt them to their future professional activities;
- to develop innovative and informative forms of teaching;
- to strengthen the ties between the teaching process and internships;
- to integrate international contacts and partnerships into the educational process;
- to actively participate in exchange programs and joint projects.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
The Head of the faculty is responsible for the work performance of the department and is appointed and dismissed by the university rector in accordance with faculty dean statement.
The acting Head of the faculty is Associate Professor Faizova K.Kamilya, the owner of the order Palmes Aademiques of France and of the diploma of National School of Administration, France.
Main publications: French language course book «Marienne-7», Articles on didactic approaches of teaching phonetics, Participation in the works of International Congress in Vienna, Quebec, Sophia, Montreux and in the International project «Culture of Teaching and learning» held by AUF/CECO.
Аcademic and Methodical Council of the Faculty is an advisory body created to develop and implement activities aimed at improving the quality of education, formulation of proposals on major issues of methodical support of the academic process. The Council is run by three supervisors: 1) on theoretical subjects, 2) on language subjects and 3) on translation and interpretation subjects. They monitor the overall academic process in the Department and academic-methodical documentation of the study program.
The International Cooperation of the faculty is focused on the content and quality of international cooperation in order to make internationalization a balanced element of education and research in the following areas: bilateral cooperation agreements, membership in international organizations and associations, participation in international scientific conferences and projects.
The Students’ Research Work Branch of the faculty is connected with the research of theoretical and practical problems of oral and written translation, contrastive research of the native and foreign languages as the basic for forming intercultural-communicative competence. Students present their scientific reports at the annual traditional scientific-practical conferences “Translator as a mediator in the intercultural communication” & “The translator of the XXI century”.
Students’ social activities are closely connected with students’ club “Orion”. The mission of the club is to create the conditions to develop intellectual and creative skills of students of the faculty. Club’s activities are based on the following directions: social; cultural; editorial; translational and the debate club. The President of the Club is Aduov Kuanysh.
REGULATIONS
OF THE
TRANSLATION FACULTY
- The present regulation is worked out to manage the academic process at Translation faculty of Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages and is confirmed by the University Rector.
- This regulation is an internal standard document of the Faculty and is not subject to be submitted to other sides, except auditors of certified bodies checking management systems and consumers-partners (under their requirement) with the permission of the Rector.
- All kinds of activity mentioned in the regulation are supervised by Dean's office, Heads of departments and staff members responsible for the faculty’s academic and social activities.
- Regulation is obligatory for all members of the Faculty.

Regulations on management of Academic and
Methodological work in Higher Educational Institutions
- Regulation is discussed at the Faculty Council meeting and accepted after the Faculty Council members’ voting.
- Participants of the academic process (Dean, deputy Dean and heads of departments) are responsible for the work performance and for the development of the quality assurance system at the faculty.
- Head of the Faculty’s Academic and Methodical Council, Faculty members in charge of Staff Scientific and Students’ Research works, Methodical Units for the first, second, third, and fourth years of study are responsible for coordinating functional responsibilities in accordance with the Orders of the Ministry of Education and Science of the RK and other standard norms on Education.
- Planning of the academic process is implemented on corresponding levels of the Faculty (group, division, year of study, department, faculty) and consists of faculty and department plans of all types of activity (academic and methodical work, scientific research work, educational work) as well as the plans of faculty members who are responsible for academic and methodical, scientific-research and educational works.
2. Educational and methodical process of the Faculty
- Educational and methodical process of the faculty is carried out with an aim of developing and improving the quality of education, formulation of proposals on major issues of methodological council.
- Educational and methodical plans reflect the major dimensions of the State educational system development program up to 2015 and are aimed at
- examining educational programs and modules;
- encouraging the design of teaching materials;
- developing modern educational technologies,
- identifying and promoting new models of educational activities;
- creating conditions for implementation of innovative potential of educational process;
- organizing seminars, conferences, trainings, workshops to improve the teaching process quality.
- At the Department Council sitting:
- proposals on strategy and methodical work are developed;
- modules are analyzed and examined;
- report on teaching and methodical work is delivered.
- At all Department levels (beginning with methodical unions on Modules up to departments’ Teaching and Methodical Council) the following documentations are discussed, analyzed and approved:
- methodical recommendations for curriculums;
- curriculums on all forms of study;
- programs on professional training;
- recommendations on writing diploma and course papers;
- recommendations on implementing modern teaching technologies;
- Academic Methodical Module Complex;
- students` self-assignments and contact hours assignments;
- examination materials;
- tests for midterm and final controls.
3. Scientific and research work of the faculty
- The scientific direction of the faculty is connected with the research of theoretical and practical problems of oral and written translation, contrastive research of the native and foreign languages as the basic of forming of intercultural-communicative competence.
- Scientific and research work planning is based on the State Research work Program and includes:
- Plan of scientific and research work of the faculty;
- Plans of scientific and research work of the departments;
- Plans of tutor’s activity.
- The main directions of the research work include Student’s scientific and research work as well as the participation in language and research Olympiads, projects and competitions. Students present their scientific reports at the annual traditional scientific-practical conferences “Translator is a mediator in the intercultural communication” & “The translator of the XXI century”.
4. Main Provisions of Organizing Social Activities
The social activities at the Kazakh Ablai khan University of International Relations and World Languages are oriented at the main principles of the Constitution of the RK, “The Address of the President of the RK to the People of Kazakhstan”, the state conception on youth policy of the RK.
The aims of the social activities are:
- to instill civic spirit and patriotism, respect to the motherland;
- to define the activities and directions, which provide the students with social protection;
- to form foundations for harmonious development of morals, physical and creative abilities of the students;
- to enrich knowledge and understanding by studying the culture, history of the Kazakh people.
The basic principles of the social activities are:
- scientific foundations and a complex approach to the social activities;
- maintenance of rights and freedom of the youth, democracy in solving the youth problems;
- respect the rights, freedom and interests of the youth.
5. Provisions for Translation social activities
- Social work planning provisions for social activities of the Translation faculty students are carried out in accordance with the Faculty plan. They include Educational work plans of the university, faculty, chair, supervisors, and Orion students’ club plan for current the academic year.
- The Social work plans reflect issues of basic trends of state youth policy and social support of students such as:
- students cultural and sports activities;
- preventive measures against violation and religious extremism;
- intensification of students’ motivation for social useful and creative activity
- promotion of students’ patriotic and civil law awareness;
- moral and international upbringing;
- financial support for students;
- creating conditions for healthy lifestyle;
- Strategy of student's club "Orion"
Club "Orion" (further – the Club) is a public association organized for the interests of students and operates within the powers provided by the present SW Regulations of the faculty;
The mission of the club is to create the conditions to develop intellectual and creative skills of students of the faculty.
Objectives are:
- to assist in civil, social and professional self-realization of students;
- to organize the student’s social events, conferences and round tables, exhibitions;
- to lighten the student’s affairs through the Mass Media, etc.
Organizational and social activities of the club are carried out by Board of tutors led by a Senior tutor of the Faculty and Committee on Youth affairs and headed by the pro-rector on SW of the university.
- Orion students club’s basic trends
At the meeting of the Organizing Committee
- basic trends of the club activities are defined;
- Club’s annual plan is discussed and approved;
- list of students needed in accommodations, vulnerable students, candidates for nominal scholarship is confirmed and passed to the Faculty Board;
Social activities of the Club is aimed at association with supervisors of the following university departments: International Cooperation, Intermediate State Monitoring for 2 course, students hostel, course tutors and the Faculty Board, the Committee of the Youth Affairs, university’s admission commission;
- collects data base of the club members according to its structure;
- caries out planned campaigns according to approved schedule;
- establishes communications with the Faculty Board, the tutors’ board, and other university departments in the frame of the basic trends of the club activity;
- realizes the plan of the Club
6. General Regulations on Tutorship
Tutor plays an important role in preparing future specialists. By working closely with the staff of the chair and other social organizations as well as the students of the group, the tutor organizes academic and social lives of the group.
The main task of the tutor is to teach students to self management of the teaching process.
The main functions of the tutor are:
- to learn the individual peculiarities of the students;
- to unite the members of the group;
- to control the students’ activities;
- to intensify the social life of students, their involvement in various social work and their self-management;
- to instill in students a sense of patriotism, respect and love to their motherland, faculty and future work;
- to improve cultural and ethnical behavior of students at the university, in dormitories, in the society and to form a favorable psychological climate in the team.
Rights and responsibilities of the tutor are:
- Tutor organizes the social activities of the group according to the annual plan of the chair;
- Tutor develops plans for educational work with involvement of student activists, tutors, faculty members and define priorities in the educational work of the faculty;
- Tutor implements continuous monitoring and recording of the academic process and the culture of students at the faculty;
- Tutor assists students in organizing and conducting various activities;
- Tutor monitors and helps in improving the material resources of the faculty, dormitories;
- Tutor unites the group members by
- studying their personal files;
- observing their behavior;
- talking to students and exchanging the opinions;
The file of the tutor should contain:
- Register of the group including the plan of the social activities;
- Students’ profile (social status of the students, their rights and responsibilities, and so on);
- Main provisions of tutorship, national and university anthems.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
Student Affairs' primary focus is to create a positive learning environment that fosters successful learning and personal development, both inside and outside of the traditional classroom. Student learning and success is enhanced when the academic environment and community support students' full development as individuals-not just as isolated intellects-and when students are seen as important partners in the learning experience.
The first priority of Student Affairs is students' development as successful, intellectually curious learners, and as healthy, competent, active citizen participants in our country. The branch works to create a learning environment that eliminates barriers standing in the way of student learning, development, and success.
